The Magic of Human Connection: How David Peace Brings People Together
The trick is rarely the point. The trick is a vehicle for something else — a shared reaction, a moment of genuine connection between people who were strangers five minutes ago. That's what I've come to believe magic is actually for, after years of doing it at events across Ireland.
What Happens Between People
When I perform close-up magic for a group, there's a moment — usually right after the effect lands — where everyone in the group looks at each other before they look at me. They're checking whether the others saw what they just saw. That instinct to share the experience with the people next to you, to confirm that reality just did something strange, is one of the most human things I witness at my work.
People who arrived at an event as strangers find themselves bonded over a shared confusion. That's not nothing. At a corporate networking event, at a wedding where two families are meeting for the first time, at a party where the guest list is a mix of old friends and new — that natural bonding over a shared impossible moment is genuinely valuable.
The Tarot Connection
Tarot creates a different kind of connection. One-to-one, quieter, more personal. The connection there isn't between guests — it's between me and the person sitting across from me. I try to create a space where they feel genuinely heard. People talk about things in a tarot reading that they don't always have a natural opening to discuss elsewhere. The cards give us permission to go to real places in the conversation.
More than once, someone has come back to thank me after a reading, not because of anything mystical that happened, but because they felt genuinely listened to. That's the thing I value most about the tarot work.
Why This Matters for Events
The best events aren't just well-organised. They're the ones where guests leave feeling something. Connection to other guests, to the occasion, to themselves. Magic — both the close-up kind and the quieter tarot kind — creates the conditions for that feeling. It gives people experiences worth having.
