Getting the Whole Room Ready for Tarot

Most hen parties I get booked for either want private readings one at a time in a quiet corner or a bit of close up magic while everyone mingles, so when the organiser told me the group wanted something different I was interested straight away. She had asked me whether the readings could all happen together as a group and I was happy to facilitate it because it suits a hen party really well when the group is close and everyone is comfortable with each other.

So rather than diving straight in, I started with a proper welcome for the whole group. I introduced the tarot, explained how I work with it and what the cards are actually for, then ran a few short exercises to get everyone into the right headspace before a single card was drawn. That part matters more than people expect. Tarot works best when the person sitting across from you is genuinely open to it and a room full of people who are relaxed and curious will always get more out of a reading than a room full of people who are nervous and waiting for it to be over.

Everyone Heard Every Reading

We set up at a big dining table with all 15 of them sitting around it and whoever was next for a reading came up to the top of the table to sit with me. Because the whole group had asked for it to be done out in the open, everyone heard everything and that ended up being the best part of the afternoon. There was plenty of laughter around the table and a few of them spotted the same things in each other's readings before I had even said them out loud.

That format is not for everyone and I never push it. Some people want the privacy of a one to one reading with nobody listening and that is completely fine. This group told me clearly that they were happy being open with each other and once I knew that, the afternoon had a lovely momentum to it that would have been impossible to create if I had pulled each of them away one at a time.

Going Deeper Than a Quick Reading Usually Allows

I worked with the Major Arcana for this one, so 22 cards rather than the full deck. I laid three cards for each person looking at their past, present and future. With three cards per person across 15 people, repeats were always going to happen. The same card came up for several different hens across the afternoon, which is something I actually enjoy because it lets me show how one card can mean something entirely different depending on the life sitting in front of it.

Working from the Major Arcana also meant I could go much deeper on each card than I normally would. In a standard reading you might spend a few minutes on a card and then move on, but here each card could easily have filled 20 or 30 minutes on its own if we had let it. Where other readings stay at a high level and cover a lot of ground quickly, this one let me sit inside the cards with the group and pull the detail out of them, so we were talking about relationships, careers and everything in between with real substance behind it.

The Card That Never Turned Up

Out of all 22 Major Arcana cards, only one failed to appear across the entire afternoon. Someone asked me at the end whether that had happened and when I looked back through every reading it turned out the Hanged Man was the only card that never came up once. Its absence was so noticeable that the whole group ended up talking about it, which was a lovely way to close out the afternoon.

The Hanged Man is not about punishment or bad luck, which is what most people assume from the name. It is about pausing, letting go and choosing not to rush forward into the next thing. The card is a reminder that sometimes the wisest move is to hang back and wait, to see where a situation is actually going before you commit to a direction you cannot undo. That message landed well with a group of hens standing right on the edge of a big life change, because there is a real relief in being told you do not have to have everything figured out this minute.

It is a lesson I have taken with me since that afternoon as well. If you do not know the right decision, it is often far better to make no decision than to rush into the wrong one and trusting that timing is something a lot of us find genuinely hard. The tarot is mystical in the way it surfaces these things, but it is also deeply practical in what it asks you to do with them.
