I Saw Derren Brown's Only Human Show in Dublin. Here's What That Was Like.
There are nights that remind you exactly why you fell in love with this art in the first place. Last night was one of them. I went to see Derren Brown's Only Human show at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin and I honestly don't think I've left a show more inspired in years, it was probably the last time I saw Derren live!
The Gaiety Theatre
Before I even get to the show itself, I have to say something about the building. The Gaiety is one of the most stunning theatres in Dublin. It's a genuinely historic venue. So many performers and actors have started and built their careers on that stage over the years. When you walk in, you feel the weight of that history straight away. You can absolutely see why Derren loves performing there. It has that old, warm, theatrical energy that modern venues just can't replicate.
There were around a thousand people in that night. A full house, buzzing from the moment people took their seats.
Watching a Master at Work
Derren Brown is simply the best in the world at what he does, especially in the mentalism space. That's not an opinion I hold lightly. It's just what becomes obvious when you watch him in a room.
The audience interaction in Only Human is extraordinary. He draws people in so completely that by the end of a sequence you're not quite sure whether you've just watched a performance or lived through something real. That's the mark of someone who has mastered every layer of the craft. The timing, the psychology, the misdirection, the storytelling. All of it working together without showing a single seam.
Watching someone perform the art you love at that level is a particular kind of experience. You notice every decision being made. And the whole time you're thinking about how you'd approach the same moment, the same choice, the same beat. Then you watch him do it perfectly and you just have to sit back in awe.
A Room Full of Performers
I wasn't the only one from the magic world there on the night. A few other performers had made the trip to Dublin for the show, which made the whole evening feel even more special. There's something genuinely great about sitting in an audience like that. You're surrounded by people who understand every decision being made on stage, who recognise the craft behind each moment, and who are still completely gripped by it.
That's a testament to how good the show is. When a room full of professionals gets lost in your performance, you're doing something right.
What I Took Away
I left the Gaiety feeling fired up to get better. That's the best thing a live show can do for you. It doesn't just entertain you. It sends you back to your own work with fresh eyes and a renewed sense of what's possible.
If you ever get the chance to see Derren Brown live, take it. He's one of those performers you need to experience in a room. The difference between watching him on screen and being there in person is enormous. The scale of what he creates, the collective reaction of a thousand people at the same moment. There's nothing quite like it.
Nights like that are the reason I do what I do.
